(DALLAS, TEXAS, 8/16/2018) – The Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-DFW) is renewing the call for Plano City Council member Tom Harrison to resign over his sharing in February of an Islamophobic Facebook post calling on President Trump to “ban Islam in American schools.”

After the council member posted the offensive video, Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere called for Harrison’s resignation, saying he “is unfit to serve as council member in a diverse city such as Plano.” Harrison eventually apologized after the controversy spread online and in local news, but he refused to resign.

Soon after apologizing, additional racists and Islamophobic Facebook posts by Harrison surfaced that indicated a pattern of anti-Muslim and anti-minority animus.

Local activists formed the group Our Plano One Plano to organize a petition campaign for a recall election. However, confusion over the number of signatures required for a recall ultimately led a judge to cancel the recall.

CAIR-DFW Executive Director John Janney said that an apology without resignation feels hollow.

“Someone who calls on the administration to ban Islam cannot be trusted to represent the Plano community, which includes a large and vibrant Muslim population,” said Janney. “There is no acceptable apology without resignation.”

Janney urges citizens to register to vote before the October 9 deadline and to vote for candidates that reflect American values. CAIR-DFW is participating in the National Muslim Voter Registration Day on August 24 as part of the #MyMuslimVote campaign.
