(DALLAS, TEXAS, 7/24/2018) – The Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-DFW) welcomes the conviction of a man who opened fire into Muslim-owned Omar’s Wheels and Tires in Pleasant Grove with the intention of killing Muslims.
The shooter, Anthony Paz Torres, 33, visited the shop on December 17, 2015, asking if the workers were Muslim and then started cursing them. Torres returned on Christmas Eve and started shooting into the tire shop, wounding four people and killing Enrique Garcia-Mendoza, 25, while the victim waited for his friend’s tire to be fixed.
According to The Dallas Morning News, Torres told police officers that Muslims “should be second-class citizens.” The jury returned a guilty verdict after one hour of deliberation.

In response to the verdict, CAIR-DFW Executive Director John Janney stated:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Garcia-Mendoza family as well as the Yousef and Omar families and others affected by this senseless, hate-motivated attack. We are relieved that justice was served and pray that the killer’s sentencing fits his crime.”
Janney also thanked Dallas County Prosecutor Clinton Stiffler, the police who responded to the incident and the jurors for their service.
CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
The Washington-based organization’s recently-released 2018 Civil Rights Report, “Targeted,” showed a 17 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents against American Muslims from 2016 to 2017, and a 15 percent increase in the number of anti-Muslim hate crimes in that same time period. Out of the 2599 anti-Muslim incidents in 2017, 15 percent happened in Texas.
